Texas Hold’em is said to be in the gambling picture from the early 1900s, but it was only until 1960s when it was first introduced in Las Vegas casinos. Since then it has become gamblers favourite card game and grew popular around the world. Today it is the most played poker game in the world.
How to play
Texas hold’em generally takes place with 5-7 players. Each player is given two cards starting from the left side of the dealer which they have to use to make the best possible combinations with the cards on the table. The best five-card combination wins the hands. Here is the ranking of the card combinations that decides the winner. There is a total of 10 hands that every player should know before joining the table.
The strongest hand in the game is the royal flush(10,J,Q,K,A of spades). It cannot be beaten by anything. It consists of an ace, king, queen, jack, and ten of the same suit. Getting this hand automatically wins you the round without a doubt.
Next in the ranking is the straight flush. It is similar to the royal flush, but it is a five-card sequence of any cards of the same suit(7,8,9,10,J of clubs). In case of a tie, the highest rank sequence will win the hand.
Four of a kind
Any four random cards of the same rank with a fifth ‘kicker’ card(A,A,A,A,10) is the next in ranking and is called four of a kind. In case of a tie, the player with a higher side card wins the hand.
Any three cards of the same rank and the other two cards with a different-same rank (A,A,A,10,10) is a full house. In case of a tie, the higher rank three matching cards win.
Any five cards of the same suit without a sequence (10,7,5,4,A of diamonds) is called a flush. In case of a tie, the player with a higher rank card flush wins.
Any five cards of random suits but in sequence (10 of spades, 9,8 of clubs, 7 of diamond, 6 of heart) is called a straight. In case of a tie, the highest rank straight will win the hand.
Three of a kind
Any three cards of the same rank and two random kicker cards (K,K,K,8,6) is called a three of a kind. In case of a tie, the player with the highest kicker card/ Highest second kicker card wins the hand.
Any two random cards of the same rank, two cards of different matching rank and one kicker (J,J,7,7,K) is called two pair. In case of a tie with both players having the identical two pairs, the player with higher kicker card wins.
Any two cards of the same rank and three kicker cards (10,10,5,7,8) is called a pair. In case of a draw, the player holding the highest/highest second/ highest third card wins the hand.
If none of the about conditions apply to any of the players at the table, then the player with the highest rank card will win the hand.
