Brazil
covers almost half of the South American continent. It is bordered
to the north, west and south by all South American countries except
Chile and Ecuador; to the east is the Atlantic. The country is relatively
flat with over 60% of the country consisting of plateau. Almost
entirely covered with thick rainforest, the north of Brazil is known
as the 'exotic Amazon', an area where nature prevails over all else.
The Amazon River and its tributaries are ideal for boat excursions
and offer excellent angling.
Brasilia, the country's capital, is known for its futuristic architecture,
most notably in the Praca dos Tres Poderes and The National Congress.
In contrast, Rio de Janeiro is renowned for its excellent beaches,
such as Copacabana and Ipanema, and of course for its world-famous
carnival.
The food varies, from north to south: all the way from the exotic
flavors of typical regional foods and many fruits you have never
heard of before, to very international seasonings. Specialties in
Brazilian cuisine include vatapa (shrimps, fish oil and coconut
milk, bread and rice), feijoada (baked black beans with meat, rice
and vegetables) and sarapatel (liver, heart, tomatoes, peppers,
onion and gravy). The local draught beer is called chopp.
The best entertainment occurs in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo after
midnight. Small clubs provide nightly entertainment throughout both
cities. You will find a richly musical people, represented by the
bossa nova of "The Girl from Ipanema" and the rhythmic African beats. |
